I Have been asked more than once what video and camera gear I use on my motorcycle trips. That is a valid question, so I think I will take this time to share what's in the bag, the camera bag that is. Lets start with the video gear. I am using some pretty basic entry level video camera. currently I am shooting a mini Dv Canon zr500. The reason I picked this model of camcorder, was for its small size and it was the least expensive one that allowed the use of a external mic. I went with dv tapes so I could archive what I shoot on the tapes. That allows me to go back and re-edit a movie if I loose one of the edited projects. I have been experimenting to find the best place to mount my video camera. I have a spot on the back for the rear facing shots but I am still looking for a good forward view.
I edit my videos on a Apple imac using imovie, it is a easy to edit using this setup but I would like to move into using Final Cut for editing someday.
My Camera bag seems to change on just bout every ride, looking for that right combo that gives enough quality with little bulk. I have used a combination of point and shoot and a digital SLRs to document our trips. On a ride to eastern oregon this fall I tried an entry level, 10 meg nikon D40x, with 24mm and 85mm prime lenses. The camera is very compact and produced some nice shots. For scenics this basic package worked pretty well. I have also carried a D200, D2s, 17-55, 80-200 and a compact 400mm but I felt like this kit although produced good shots just was to much bulk. Who knows what I will settle on in the future. I guess I will keep on tweaking what's in the bag till I get it right.
